FIFA changes penalty rules due to Emiliano Martinez’s behaviour in the World Cup

The International Football Association Board changed the penalty kick rules due to the actions of Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine national team goalkeeper, in the 2022 World Cup, which was held in Qatar and crowned by his country.

Martinez sparked controversy in the knockout stages when he deliberately provoked his opponents in the penalty shootout with actions that would distract these players, which he actually succeeded in.

Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar for the third time in its history, after defeating France in the final match with a penalty shootout, in which Emiliano Martinez used all provocative methods against the roosters.

He has since celebrated by mocking French national team players, including brandishing a doll with Kylian Mbappe’s face on it, prompting some to describe him as “football’s most hated man”.

The Aston Villa star was still ecstatic with victory as he addressed the more than 100,000 people who had gathered in his hometown, Mar del Plata, to celebrate his achievement in winning the most expensive trophy in world football for his country.

Martinez touched on Tshwamini wasting the second penalty in the penalty shootout, and said sarcastically: “When I saved the first penalty kick in the final, I knew that the other boy (Tchwamini) would be very nervous.”

He added, “I tried to play him mentally by throwing the ball away and talking to him … and he missed the goal, spoiling everything.”

Change the penalty kick laws

The French newspaper L’Equipe said that, based on the new laws set by the FIFA Council, goalkeepers will not be able to incorrectly distract the penalty kick taker, by delaying execution or touching the post, crossbar or net.

FIFA also decided to reduce the exaggerated celebrations, including forcing the referees to calculate the times of goal celebrations within stoppage time, and these amendments to FIFA laws are scheduled to be applied starting from the new sports season 2023-2024.
